Cherohala Skyway Drive
** Registration for this event has reached its limit and is now closed **
Our next event, the Cherohala Skyway Drive, is coming up on Sunday, September 17. There’s a nominal fee of $10, but lunch is included!
Audi Atlanta/Audi Marietta is once again on board as title sponsors for the drive. We greatly appreciate their continued contribution to our events.
This year, in an effort to address a significant increase in traffic in the area, we’re changing the format a bit. First, we’re skipping the boring convoy-style drive out of the City. You may want to start early and plan your own route to the starting point.
The event will begin with lunch at Tapoco Lodge just north of Robbinsville, NC. Make sure you get there by noon and we’ll save you a seat in the Tavern. It’s roughly 2 1/2 hours from Metro Atlanta. After lunch, we’ll head north on US 129 (yes! That’s the road also known as the Tail of the Dragon). Beyond the tail, there is a beautiful stretch of US 129 along the Little Tennessee River that most people don’t get to see because they turn around and go back south. We’re not doing that! Instead, we’ll continue until we catch up with US 411 in Vonore, TN. After a brief pit stop, we go south on TN 68 toward Tellico Plains and begin the drive east on the Cherohala Skyway. By then, most of the other city folk will have gone home, so be prepared for the fast, sweeping curves with dramatic views that the Skyway is still known for. There are many terrific overlooks along this route, and we will plan to stop at one of the few that has restrooms. The drive will end in Robbinsville, and most of you should have no trouble getting back home by dinner time.
As you may know, this road was not built to serve transportation needs, but purely for leisure (and sport). This is clearly evident in the unusually precise and reliable radius of almost every curve. You can read more about the history and purpose of this feat of engineering here. The complete route for this event can be found from this Google Map link here.
Sponsorship for this premier event is kindly provided by Audi Atlanta and Audi Marietta
